Scratchboard is a form of engraving that allows you to create unique works of art using sharp or abrasive tools such as x-acto knives, tattoo needles, etc. The boards are created with a layer of white kaolin clay and black India ink on top of the clay. Removing the ink using various tools and methods creates a black and white image with varying tones.

In this class, you will use professional, artist grade panels and tools to practice the various techniques of ink removal. Options to colour the work will be discussed and the instructor will provide materials for testing.

Lori will teach you the history of the medium, basic techniques, and terminology before guiding you through a practice session. Then you will have the opportunity to work on a small project of your own. The instructor will supply the reference photo, transfer paper, and tools required to both practice and complete a small artwork.

Basic drawing skills are an asset to learning scratchboard, especially regarding working in realism, but are not necessary to register for this class. Scratchboard allows for fine detail in your work, and it can be very relaxing, fun, and meditative!
