Scratchboard is a form of engraving that can be meditative and relaxing. It entails creating unique works of art by using sharp or abrasive tools such as X-acto knives, tattoo needles, etc., on boards coated with a layer of white kaolin clay, which is then layered with black India ink. By removing the ink, you create a black and white image with varying tones.

In this class, we will use professional artist-grade panels and tools to practise various ink removal techniques. After a brief introduction of Scratchboard’s history, basic techniques, and terminology, Lori will guide you through a practice session before you work on a small project of your own. Lori will supply the reference photo and the tools you require.

Basic drawing skills are an asset to learning scratchboard, especially regarding working in realism, but are not necessary to register for this class.
