Cold wax adds body, transparency and depth to oil paint, speeds up drying time, increases the paint’s workability and removes the precautions required for encaustic (hot wax painting) such as special ventilation and fire safety. It is also very forgiving and can be reworked easily until you achieve the result you want. Cold wax has a thick texture that can be carved into for dramatic effect and can be a wonderful base for collage.
In this class we will explore the possibilities of painting with cold wax on thick cotton paper suitable for framing and on wooden boards. We’ll experiment with different ways of applying the wax: brushes, palette knives and – my favourite – finger painting!
