It entails creating unique works of art by using sharp or abrasive tools such as X-acto knives\, tattoo needles\, etc.\, on boards coated with a layer of white kaolin clay\, which is then layered with black India ink. By removing the ink\, you create a black and white image with varying tones. \n In this class\, we will use professional artist-grade panels and tools to practise various ink removal techniques. After a brief introduction of Scratchboard’s history\, basic techniques\, and terminology\, Lori will guide you through a practice session before you work on a small project of your own. It is also very forgiving and can be reworked easily until you achieve the result you want. Cold wax has a thick texture that can be carved into for dramatic effect and can be a wonderful base for collage. \nIn this class we will explore the possibilities of painting with cold wax on thick cotton paper suitable for framing and on wooden boards. Make beads\, pendants\, animal sculptures\, flowers\, bowls – the possibilities are endless. Bring your imagination! We’ll use non-toxic and gluten-free white modelling clay. \nWe’ll use moist fingers and tools to shape and texture the clay\, and found objects to imprint the clay. Large pieces dry protected with a loose plastic bag so they dry slowly and don’t crack. The clay air hardens in 1-2 days and the surface dries overnight. If thick\, it might take several days to dry completely. Once dry\, you can sand it smooth and paint with clear or coloured acrylic\, solid or patterned.
