Luscious, luminous and textural! Encaustic painting is all of these and more!

Learn the basics of the encaustic process. Paint, fuse, layer and texture with hot wax and colour. An array of texture tools, materials, collage items and brushes will be provided, enabling you to explore the intriguing ways of working with wax.  No experience required and no materials to bring; everything is provided.

Topics covered include: an introduction to the medium, brief history of encaustic, safety concerns, the use of the heat gun as a fusing tool, mixing colours, basic layering, creating smooth/textured surfaces, incorporating collage, using imagery, gouging and filling incisions with medium and oil paint.  Using the techniques demonstrated, each student will create their own unique small pieces.

Materials and equipment supplied by the Instructor:

Painting Materials: wax medium, colour, wooden supports (1 8 X 8” cradled panel + boards, per student), collage materials, texture materials, pastels, reference materials

Equipment and Tools: heated griddles and heat guns (1 setup for 2 people), texture tools, a variety of wax brushes, stencils, wax pans

Materials List for students:

Students are not required to bring anything. The instructor will bring reference photos

and examples of work, however students may want to bring their own reference photos of a simple subject.

Course Fee: Members-$60 + $15 Materials Fee = $75  / Non-members-$75 + $15 Materials Fee = $90
